WH - The First Global Age | We will finish up sections 4 and 5 on Monday and Tuesday, and we will test this unit on Friday, 11/1. Our packets will be due then as well.
Geo - US and Canada | We are testing on the 50 States on Wednesday this week while also moving on to the second-half of our unit, where we look at the cultural geography of the region. We will likely test next week, possibly on Tues, 11/5. US - WWI Era (1914-1919) - We are finishing up our last two sections on Monday and Tuesday. We will review with the students on the block days, and then we will be testing the unit (Chapters 9 & 10) on Friday. Unit packets are also due. American Heroes - This week, we are studying the French & Indian War. Sociology - Groups | We are beginning this unit on Groups by watching a docu-drama ("The Wave") that explores in-group/out-group forces and the power of a social movement to displace personal reasoning and even principles. This will be short unit, and we are unlikely to test over it. Economics - We are studying economic systems, such as market economies, command economies. Civics - We are wrapping up and reviewing for our IL Constitution, testing on Nov. 1. Current Events - We are looking at human trafficking as a world issue. No School | Monday, October 14
WH - The First Global Age | We will begin reading Chapter 3, Section 1 to understand how the Spanish conquer the Aztec and Inca. We will be writing an essay this week on this topic. Geo - US and Canada. On Tuesday, we will take a quiz on the South region and then go to the cafe as a reward for the students. Our focus this week will be on the Midwest and on the climate and vegetation of the US & Canada. US - WWI Era (1914-1919) - We will begin reading through Chapter 10 this week. Our map quiz will be on Wednesday. American Heroes - We are wrapping our first unit on the New World. Sociology - Socialization & Social Structures Economics - We are examining the laws of supply and demand, including the supply curve. We will be quizzing on the block day. Civics - We are wrapping up and reviewing for our Constitution test on Oct. 15. Geo - Our new unit is on the physical and cultural geography of the US and Canada. We will be having regular map quizzes on the various US regions. US - We are examining the Progressive Era (1900-1920). We will finish this chapter on Tuesday. Then, we will begin our next chapter on World War I, which will be the final chapter before our unit test. American Heroes - We are wrapping our first unite on the New World. Sociology - We have begun our second unit, Culture. This week, we will be looking at the elements of behavioral control and uniformity of culture. We will also begin discussing cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. Economics - We are examining the laws of supply and demand, including the supply curve. We will be quizzing on the block day. Civics - We are wrapping up and reviewing for our Constitution test on Oct. 15. Geo - Human Geography | We are about to wrap up our second unit, which examines population trends, culture, religion, etc. US - We are examining the Progressive Era (1900-1920). American Heroes - We learning about the Puritans and the 13 Colonies. (New World Unit) Sociology - We have begun our second unit, Culture. This week, we will be looking at the elements of behavioral control and uniformity of culture. We will also begin discussing cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. Economics - We are examining the laws of supply and demand, including the supply curve. Civics - We are continuing the US Constitution unit, a graduation requirement. Current Events - We are discussing impeachment, looking at the Ukrainian phone transcript and the whistleblower complaint. WH - Renaissance & Reformation Unit | We will continue on with the second half of the unit which focuses on the Reformation. This week, we will look at Henry VIII's break with the Catholic Church (C1, S4). We will test 10/1.
Geo - We are half-way through our unit Human Geography. We will take time this week to look at cultural diffusion, world religions, and governmental and economic structures. US - We have begun Chapter 9 on the Progressive/Reform era. This week will be spent introducing the ideas of progressivism and the various goals of the diverse members of the Progressive movement. American Heroes - We are watching the New World movie to close out our unit on Jamestown. Sociology - Unit 3: Socialization & Social Structures | Unit 3 is comprised of Chapters 4 and 5. This week, we will look at the first half of Chapter 4, the importance of socialization. Economics - Civics - We have begun the US Constitution—a graduation requirement—on the block days. Current Events - Currently, we are reading about and discussing fake news and media bias. WH - Renaissance & Reformation Unit | We will continue with the second-half of our unit, focusing on the Reformation.

This week, we will be looking at the elements of behavioral control and uniformity of culture. We will also begin discussing cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. Economics - Finishing Unit 1 (What is Economics?) / We are finishing our discussion of opportunity costs and testing on 9/17. Civics - We are wrapping up our unit on the origins of government, testing on 9/17. We will then begin the US Constitution, a graduation requirement. Current Events - We are discussing the Green New Deal, facial recognition, and privacy concerns. WH - Renaissance & Reformation Unit | We will be learning about the Renaissance in Northern Europe and comparing it to the Renaissance in Italy.

Our chapter packet is due that day, while our map packet will be due on 9/13. US - We are half-way through C8. This week, we will be examining the causes and effects of US expansionism/imperialism under the Roosevelt and Taft Administrations. American Heroes - We are learning about Pocahontas and Jamestown. We have a quiz scheduled for this Friday. Sociology - We have begun our second unit, Culture. This week, we are focusing on the fundamental elements of culture. Economics - Civics - We are still in our unit on the founding of the United States. Current Events - Currently, we are reading about and discussing fake news. WH - Black Death Introductory Unit | We are reading through a primary source (Boccaccio's The Decameron) and will be watching a documentary on the biological and societal effects of the Black Death before ending the week by writing an essay on the Black Death.
Geo - Map Skills/World Climates Unit | We will spend Monday practicing our map skills before closing out Chapter 1. Then, we will begin Chapter 3 by studying the diversity of world climate regions and the effects they have on human activity. US - We are beginning notes on Chapter 8 and looking at the causes/effects of the Spanish-American War along with the intellectual arguments for and against imperialism. American Heroes - We are writing an essay (due Tuesday) on "What do you think it means to be an American Hero? We hope to begin an article "Claims for Discovering North America" on the Block Day. Sociology - This week will be spent finishing up the basics of sociology in Unit 1 before we shift at the end of the week to our first reading-based discussion on the effect of culture on the individual. Economics - What is Economics - The wants and needs of our society! Civics - We're learning about the founding of our nation. Current Events - This week is being spent researching and discussing media bias. It's good to be back for the 2019-2020 school year! Before we get too far into the semester, we thought it would be a good time to remind/inform you of our late work policies.
Social Studies Late & Absent Work Policy Absences
This year, we are requiring that our students bring in a composition notebook for essay writing in Civics, American Heroes, World History, and US History. Also, to make sure that everyone starts off in a good place, we’re going to give you a chance to earn some extra credit! All you have to do is bring the listed supply to your social studies teacher. Mr. LeMond: 3x5 Index Cards Mr. Young: Blue or Black Ink Pens Mr. Baldwin: Expo Markers or Highlighters Mr. Schneider: Pencils Please bring these supplies in before August 30, 2019. If you are not able to participate in this extra credit opportunity, have no fear. There will be other opportunities later this year. |
