Geography A: We will continue with Chapter 5, looking at the physical geography of the US and Canada. We will test on the chapter material on 10/30 and will take our test on the 50 US States on 10/31. Civics: We are studying the Executive Branch of the US Government. American Heroes: We are wrapping up the Civil War/Reconstruction Unit, and then, we will move on to the Industrial Revolution. World History: We will wrap up and test on C2/C3 on Friday, 10/27. Next week, we will begin Chapter 4: The Absolute Monarchies of Europe US History: We are working our way through Chapter 10, on WW1. We will not be testing this chapter but will instead be taking several section quizzes. Current Events: We are taking a quiz on North/South Korea and are going to discuss the California wildfires. Mr. Callies (Art) joined with the Social Studies Department to defend our trophy under the auspices of "Team Britain." (Yes, we know the flag is backwards. We're Americans. USA! USA! USA!)
**No School - October 9 - Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day**
Geography A: As we prepare to conclude Chapter 4, we will begin our mini-unit on cultural diffusion. Civics: We are beginning our unit on the Illinois Constitution. We are planning on testing on this in two weeks, and this test is a graduation requirement. American Heroes: This week and next, we will be continuing our unit on the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. World History: We will begin our unit on the exploration/conquest of the world by Europe. US History: We will continue with Chapter 9, on the Progressive Era, planning to test on October 17. Current Events: Our students will be working on their North Korea projects. Geography A: We will begin Chapter 4, which looks at demographics and world population trends. Civics: We are reviewing for the US Constitution test which will be on October 3. American Heroes: We are starting our unit on the Civil War. World History: We are wrapping up Chapter 1 with a section on the English Reformation. We will be reviewing our material on Friday/Monday and testing on October 3. US History: We will conclude Chapter 8 on the block day and will review the material on Friday. Our test is scheduled for Monday, October 2. Current Events: We are finishing our fake news unit and beginning a study of North Korea and its relationship with the US. Geography A: We will continue working on Chapter 2, which focuses on the physical world.
Civics: We are working on our US Constitution unit. American Heroes: We are wrapping Unit 1 and will be moving into the world of civility and the Civil War era. World History: We will begin Chapter 1 which details the Renaissance of Europe, including the Reformation and the creation of the Church of England. US History: Chapter 8 is up next for US, which follows the US as it evolved from a regional player to a world power through the Spanish-American War. This is an SLO chapter, so we will be taking a pre- and post-test. Current Events: We are continuing our unit on media bias and fake news. **No School on Monday, September 4 - Labor Day**

American Heroes: We are continuing our unit on colonization and the mysteries of Roanoke. World History: We will begin Chapter 1 which details the Renaissance of Europe, including the Reformation and the creation of the Church of England. US History: Chapter 8 is up next for US, which follows the US as it evolved from a regional player to a world power through the Spanish-American War. This is an SLO chapter, so we will be taking a pre- and post-test. Current Events: We are continuing our unit on media bias and fake news. Geography A: We plan to finish Chapter 1, take a small quiz, and begin Chapter 2 by Friday.
Civics: We are on Unit 1 - Origins of Government. American Heroes: We are diving into the world of colonization and the mysteries of Roanoke. World History: We will begin our unit on the Black Death/Plague this week, which will help us to introduce the first chapter of our textbook on the Renaissance. US History: We will be working on and finishing our US Constitution unit. The Constitution test will given on Friday, September 1. All students must pass this test (60% or better) in order to graduate. Only two retakes will be given. Current Events: We are going to do an independent article research and presentation and next week get into liberal and conservative viewpoints, media bias and fake news. **We will take time on Monday, August 21 to discuss the historicity of eclipses.**
Geography A: We are beginning Chapter 1, which looks at the basics of geography. We’re hoping to test on Friday, August 25. Civics: This will be spent on our introduction to government. American Heroes: We’ll be using this week to select our topics for the semester. World History: We will begin our unit on the Black Death/Plague this week, which will help us to introduce the first chapter of our textbook on the Renaissance. US History: For this week and next we will work on our US Constitution unit. The Constitution test will given on Friday, September 1. All students must pass this test (60% or better) in order to graduate. Only two retakes will be given. Current Events: Our discussions this week will focus on media bias and fake news. CivicsThe Illinois Constitution test will be next week on Friday, October 14. Students have to earn a 70% or better to pass the test. American HeroesWe'll finish our unit on the Industrial Revolution, and then we'll move on to the Great Depression and WWII. US HistoryWe have begun Chapter 9 this past week. We'll have three small section quizzes next week, and we'll be looking to test on or around October 19/20. We'll also be trying to include some more SAT essay prep. World HistoryChapter 3 will take us into the first global age with the conquest of the Americas and the beginning of the African slave trade. GeographyGeography is going to be testing Chapter 4 next Friday, October 14. We'll then take a week to discuss some geographic theories of Professor Jared Diamond and the effects of geography upon culture. We'll begin Chapter 5 before the end of the month, during which we'll be working to learn the 50 US states. Government & Current EventsThese classes merged this past week to watch and discuss the Presidential Debate, which was an activity designed to give these students a taste of college. This test is a graduation requirement, and students must earn a 60% or higher in order to receive credit on this test. Students who do no pass on their first attempt will have three more opportunities to take the test; however, even if a student passes on their retake, the highest grade they can earn in the grade book is a 60%. American HeroesWe'll begin our unit on the Industrial Revolution, which will last until the end of the quarter. US HistoryConstitution retakes for the junior class are on-going. The second round of retakes are scheduled for Wednesday, September 21 after school. Following this test, there will only be one more opportunity to retake and pass the test. Our first textbook unit has begun with Chapter 8, which will see the US move from a regional power to a world power following the Spanish-American War. World HistoryWH just concluded a mini-unit on the Black Death, which set the stage for the Renaissance, the topic of our first chapter. We are currently planning on testing on this chapter on Tuesday, October 4. GeographyGeography A has been moving quickly through the first four chapters. We will likely be testing on Chapter 3 next Friday, September 23. GovernmentGovernment recently finished presentations on the presidential candidates and the parties. Their next unit will look at the origins of government. Current EventsCE finished an analysis of bias in media and will now begin a research project of the five major political parties and their positions on various issues.
